Job search tips for newcomers to Canada
Use a Canadian-style resume
Keep it to one or two pages. Leave out your photo, date of birth and marital status, which Canadian employers don’t expect. Focus on results and skills that match the job, and adjust your resume for each application. Our Canadian resume format guide walks through each section, with a template and a before-and-after example.
Check whether your job is regulated
Some occupations, such as nursing, engineering, teaching and many skilled trades, need a licence or certification from a provincial or territorial regulator before you can work in them. Check early, because the process can take time. In the meantime, look at related roles where your experience counts.
Get free help from settlement services
Government-funded settlement and employment agencies across Canada offer free resume reviews, mock interviews, job search workshops, mentoring and bridging programs. Many newcomers are eligible; contact an agency near you to find out what’s available.
Build Canadian experience and references
Volunteering, temporary roles and internships help you learn Canadian workplace culture and give you local references, which many employers ask for.
Grow your network
Many jobs in Canada are filled through referrals. Join professional associations in your field, attend community and industry events, and keep your LinkedIn profile up to date.
Use more than one job board
Job Bank, the Government of Canada’s job site, is a good place to start. Specialized job boards like New Canadian Jobs add something different: they focus on employers who actively want to hire newcomers to Canada. Use both, and set up alerts on each.
Protect yourself from job scams
A real employer will never ask you to pay to get a job, to cash a cheque and send money back, or to give your Social Insurance Number or banking details before a written job offer. If something feels wrong, don’t apply.
Hear about new jobs first
Set up a free job alert and upload your resume so employers who hire newcomers to Canada can find you.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a work permit to apply?
To be hired, you need to be legally allowed to work in Canada, for example as a citizen, a permanent resident, or with a valid work permit that covers the job. Every situation is different, so check the Government of Canada (IRCC) website for yours. We’re a job board and can’t give immigration advice.
Is New Canadian Jobs free for job seekers?
Yes. Searching, applying, job alerts and resume uploads are free.
Are these jobs only for newcomers to Canada?
No, everyone is welcome to apply. The board is built to connect newcomers to Canada with employers who are committed to welcoming them.
