The Solar & HVAC Installation Supervisor (Technical Lead) is responsible for supervising and coordinating solar photovoltaic and HVAC-related installation projects from planning through final inspection and commissioning. This role requires advanced hands-on solar installation expertise, leadership of multi-trade crews, and close coordination with engineering teams, licensed electricians, and regulatory authorities to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and in full compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan, schedule, and supervise solar PV and HVAC installation projects, ensuring quality, safety, and timely completion.
• Review engineering drawings and coordinate with the engineering team to confirm system design, electrical requirements, and installation scope.
• Confirm and approve material take-offs, ensuring accuracy and alignment with approved designs.
• Ensure required materials and equipment are available on site; pick up and transport materials for solar and HVAC projects as required.
• Supervise on-site crews, including solar technicians, electricians, and HVAC technicians, ensuring proper installation practices and compliance with safety standards.
• Provide technical guidance to solar technicians on all installation activities, including racking systems, wiring methods, inverter and battery integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
• Provide technical oversight and guidance to HVAC technicians, particularly on electrical connections and system integration with solar and energy storage systems.
• Train, mentor, and oversee junior and apprentice technicians to ensure consistent workmanship and skill development.
• Act as site project lead, coordinating daily activities, resolving technical issues, and managing installation progress.
• Coordinate with licensed Master Electricians to schedule ESA inspections and required electrical inspections for solar project completion.
• Liaise directly with Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) inspectors and other authorities to support inspections and approvals.
• Ensure all installations comply with the Ontario Electrical Code, ESA requirements, manufacturer specifications, and company standards.
• Maintain accurate site documentation, including material approvals, inspection records, and project completion reports.
• Support system testing, commissioning, and final connection prior to project handover.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of installation procedures, safety practices, and site management processes.
Skills Requirements
Education: Skilled Trades Diploma with Electrical Installation Training
Work Experience
(Previous solar installation experience is required.)
Additional Experience & Skills
• Extensive hands-on solar installation experience, including:
o Asphalt shingle roof systems
o Metal roof systems
o Ground-mounted solar systems
• Experience with grid-tied, battery-based, and off-grid solar systems.
• Strong working knowledge of energy monitoring system setup and commissioning for multiple inverter platforms, including:
o SolarEdge
o Growatt
o FoxESS
o Lux Power
o Solis
o and similar systems
• Solid understanding of electrical systems, site safety requirements, and regulatory compliance.
• Proven ability to lead crews, train technicians, and manage multi-trade work environments.
• Strong communication skills for coordination with engineers, Master Electricians, inspectors, suppliers, and internal teams.
• Ability and willingness to travel regularly to project sites.
