Position Summary
Canpac Marine Services is seeking a globally experienced, technically elite Vessel Superintendent with experience managing subsea vessels capable of managing complex marine, mechanical, and offshore engineering operations across multiple international regulatory frameworks. This position oversees vessel compliance under IMO, SOLAS, ISM, Lloyd’s Register, ABS, DNV, UK MCA, and Transport Canada, while leading advanced dry-dock projects, commissioning scopes, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
This role requires someone who has personally delivered major subsea vessel refits, international class acceptance surveys, offshore structural integrity inspections, complex hydraulic system commissioning, and multi-million-dollar new-build programs—all under extreme time, safety, and budget pressures.
Due to the technical and regulatory complexity, only applicants meeting every mandatory requirement listed below will be considered.
Job Duties
Marine & Vessel Superintendency
• Full responsibility for management, maintenance, repair, and upgrade of company vessels to international operational standards (IMO, SOLAS, ISM, LR, ABS, UK MCA).
• Lead 5-year dry docks, class return surveys, hull/structural inspections, NDT review, mechanical overhauls, and commissioning activities.
• Create, implement, and audit safety, compliance, and engineering standards to meet both Canadian and international requirements.
Technical & Engineering Leadership
• Oversee multidisciplinary engineering scopes including mechanical, electrical, structural, fluid, rotating equipment, and hydraulic systems.
• Commission complex hydraulic systems (250+ Bar(G) systems, multi-motor redundancy, 200+ miles of pipework).
• Lead integration and commissioning of ballast treatment systems, black/grey water systems, RO plants, sewage systems, and deck machinery.
Project & Program Management
• Manage full lifecycle of large-scale vessel builds, refits, and offshore construction projects (budgets ranging from $3M–$15M+).
• Deliver multi-project portfolios including ships, and floating dry-dock restoration.
• Coordinate and negotiate international regulatory approvals (MMO, DFT, DEFRA, ABS, DNV, LR, UK MCA).
Offshore & Remote Operations
• Perform offshore inspection and structural integrity management on oil & gas installations (waterline to topsides).
• Lead engineering support on polar research vessels, including deck machinery, cranes, mooring systems, and mission-critical scientific equipment.
Crew & Operational Readiness
• Develop competency programs and onboard training for engineering and deck crews.
• Ensure full compliance with Transport Canada and international crew standards.
Mandatory Skills, Education & Experience Requirements (Applicants Must Meet All Criteria)
Education
• Licensed Engineering Practitioner (LEP) or equivalent internationally recognized professional engineering licensing.
• Formal mechanical engineering education with additional training in welding engineering, pressure systems, marine engineering, AutoCad and commissioning disciplines.
Experience (Minimum Requirements)
Applicants must have ALL of the following experience:
• Minimum 20 years of combined experience across marine, offshore, renewables, civil, oil & gas, and process sectors.
• Minimum 10 years in Superintendent, Ship Manager, Senior Project Manager, or Lead Commissioning Engineer roles on subsea vessels.
• Demonstrated responsibility for vessel class acceptance under LR, DNV and ABS.
• Management of multi-million dollar newbuild or refit programs of subsea vessels, including contract negotiation and delivery.
• Offshore structural inspection experience on major installations (e.g., HESS/Baldpate or equivalent).
• Dry-dock leadership roles in at least three global jurisdictions (e.g., UK, USA, Canada, Asia).
• Direct commissioning responsibility for complex hydraulic systems, major mechanical systems, and ballast water treatment systems.
• Demonstrated leadership in confined space operations, welding oversight, and mechanical/electrical fluid system troubleshooting.
• Experience on polar research vessels or equivalent high-latitude operations (Antarctic or Arctic).
Certifications (All Required – No Exceptions)
The following certifications must be current and submitted with the application:
• CSWIP 3.2.1 Senior Welding Inspector
• CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector
• CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector
• PCN Radiographic Interpretation Level 2 (or ASNT Level 2)
• OPITO BOSIET
• Renewable UK Approved WTG Climber Certification
• Medium-Risk Confined Space (City & Guilds/CABWI)
• STCW Certification
• First Aid at Work (HSE Approved)
• Authorized Gas Tester Level 3
• Control of Work – Awareness & Performing Authority
• Non-Licensable Work with Asbestos (Including NNLW)
• IPAL Powered Access License – Cherry Picker B3
• Certification in In-Service Inspection of Pig Traps & Pressure Systems
• Full CAD proficiency (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, Bentley AutoPlant 3D)
Applications missing any certification will be automatically rejected.
Additional Required Competencies
• Ability to operate in extreme environments (offshore, polar, confined space, high-risk mechanical operations).
• Proven ability to deliver projects “on time and under budget” in fast-track, high-pressure settings.
• High-level leadership and team-management capability, including training of sea-going personnel.
