Looking for a caring, hardworking and organized support worker for a non-verbal autistic adolescent female. (Another child in this single-parent household but requires much less support.) This is a fulltime position (45 hours+ per week) that has split hours around the school day. Flexibility required to take on additional hours on sick days, snow days, school holidays and occasional weekend or overnight respite. Live-in accommodation provided.
Typical hours and activities:
Before school support (7:00-10:00) includes helping dress for school, provide breakfast, prepare a healthy packed lunch for school, and be ready for 8.15 departure to school. Light household duties after school drop-off including laundry, clean-up after meals, etc.
After-school support (2:30-8:30) includes picking up from school, engaging child in physical activities (e.g., walks, biking, swimming, etc.), preparing and feeding dinner, supervising homework, and bathing in preparation for bed. Light clean-up duties after mealtime. Drivers license a plus.
Because of the special needs child, this position does require energy, patience and a high degree of organization. The child works best under a structured schedule with clarity of the day’s agenda. While loving, also needs firm guidance at times. It also requires creativity and willingness to learn: to adapt new strategies to support autistic child with sensory issues, struggling to communicate, and meltdowns. Learning to use a speech device but slow progress. Access to therapists available to provide guidance available. Looking for someone to take initiative and proactively manage day-to-day activities as well as problem-solve on caregiving strategies.
