Title Cook Assistant (Fulltime, Permanent)
Reports To Dietary Manager
Job Purpose
Barrhead and District Social Housing Association strives to provide the best possible accommodations and services to the residents and tenants that reside within the properties the organization owns and manages. Reporting to the Dietary Manager, the Cook Assistant contributes to the success of the organization’s goals through the delivery of efficient, friendly, and high-quality service as a valued member of the dietary department and in cooperation with the entire staff team at BDSHA.
The Cook Assistant is a pivotal support role within the Barrhead & District Social, focusing on the preparation and delivery of meals to residents. This role directly assists the Dietary Manager in ensuring that all meal preparations are in line with established dietary standards and resident preferences.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the health and satisfaction of residents, possessing an ability to handle various kitchen tasks efficiently. Key traits include reliability, attention to detail, and a warm demeanor towards staff and residents.
Roles & Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to the following:
● Assist in planning and preparing meals following Canada’s Food Guide and accommodating individual dietary needs.
● Prepare ingredients and cook meals from scratch, minimizing the use of prepackaged foods.
● Serve meals professionally, ensuring residents receive preferred portions and choices.
● Maintain cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, storage areas, and allied spaces, complying with health regulations.
● Ensure food safety standards are upheld.
● Escalate any concerns with food supplies to the Cook.
● Maintain a temperature watch on the refrigerators and freezers.
● Ensure that dishes used in food preparation are properly sanitized and organized following use.
● Manage inventory and storage, including meat pulls and freezer organization.
● Collect and wash dishes post meals.
● Support a positive environment and assist residents as needed.
● Promote and adhere to the BDSHA Safety Program and Policies.
● As part of the staff team, all employees are responsible for the health and safety of the residents in the Association.
● Responsible for maintaining self-wellness and reduced absenteeism.
● Execute additional tasks as directed by the Dietary Manager or Chief Administrative Officer.
Qualifications
● Experience in food services; formal education post-secondary education either completed or in progress in food services or hospitality preferred.
● Completion of secondary school education or general education degree required.
● Current First Aid certification.
● Food safety certification is an asset.

Working Conditions
● The standard work week for this position is average 32 hours/week. (0.8) FTE
● The standard business hours for this position are from 6:00am to 2:30pm.
● Overtime, extended hours, and hours worked outside of the standard work schedule including evenings and weekends may be required.
● This position involves lifting, standing, walking, twisting, bending, reaching throughout the shift.
● Availability to work weekends and holidays.
