# Carpenter Lead Hand – Modular Installation

## About the Position
Phoenix Modular is seeking an experienced Carpenter Lead Hand to join our field installation team. This is a hands-on construction position supporting the installation, assembly, modification, repair, relocation and dismantling of modular buildings and structures.
The successful candidate will bring strong carpentry and modular construction experience and be capable of taking a lead role on site when required, including supporting crew coordination, quality control and the safe execution of modular installation work.
This is a Calgary-based position. The successful candidate must be available to report to and work from the Phoenix Modular yard in Calgary when not assigned to a project site. This is not a fly-in/fly-out position.
Regular travel throughout Western Canada is required and may include extended assignments at remote project locations. Candidates must be comfortable travelling up to 100% of the time when project schedules require it.
## Responsibilities
* Read and interpret architectural drawings, construction plans, structural details, specifications and modular assembly documents
* Measure, cut, shape, assemble and install wood and other construction materials
* Construct, install, modify and repair walls, floors, roofs, partitions, framing, blocking and other structural components
* Perform hands-on carpentry associated with the installation and integration of modular buildings and structures
* Support and coordinate the placement, setting, alignment, levelling and secure connection of modular building units
* Work with crane operators, equipment operators and site personnel during module delivery, lifting, positioning and installation
* Assist with rigging and signalling activities where properly trained and authorized
* Complete structural connections, blocking, framing, sealing, finishing and other carpentry work required during modular installation
* Coordinate with electrical, plumbing, HVAC and other trades during module integration and stitch-work while ensuring trade-specific work is completed by the appropriate personnel
* Install doors, windows, trim, fixtures and finishing components as required
* Complete repairs, renovations and modifications to existing modular structures
* Inspect completed work for alignment, level, squareness, fit, finish, weatherproofing and overall quality
* Identify and troubleshoot field installation issues, dimensional conflicts, structural misalignments and other site conditions
* Assist with resolving installation challenges efficiently while maintaining safety, quality and project requirements
* Support the sequencing of module deliveries and site activities to maintain an efficient installation process
* Provide direction and hands-on guidance to other field crew members when required
* Assist with assigning and coordinating daily work activities when acting in a lead capacity
* Support the training and mentoring of less-experienced carpenters, technicians and field personnel
* Safely operate hand tools, power tools and construction equipment for which the employee is trained and authorized
* Work safely around cranes, telehandlers, aerial work platforms and other powered mobile equipment
* Maintain a safe, clean and organized work area
* Follow Phoenix Modular safety procedures and all client and project-specific site requirements
* Work effectively with project managers, site supervisors, other trades, subcontractors and field personnel
* Complete work efficiently while maintaining quality and safety standards
* Travel to project sites throughout Western Canada, including remote locations, as required
* Report to and perform work from the Phoenix Modular yard in Calgary when not assigned to a project site
## Minimum Qualifications
* Minimum **5 years of professional carpentry experience** required
* Minimum **2 years of hands-on modular construction experience** required
* Demonstrated experience with **modular installation, relocation and dismantling** required
* Previous experience in a lead hand, senior carpenter or crew leadership capacity considered a strong asset
* Strong hands-on knowledge of commercial carpentry, framing, structural connections and modular construction
* Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, specifications and structural details
* Experience with module setting, alignment, connection and finishing
* Ability to identify and resolve field installation and construction issues
* Must be available to report to and work from the Phoenix Modular yard in Calgary when not assigned to a project site
* Must be willing and able to travel throughout Western Canada, including remote project locations
* Must be willing and able to travel up to 100% of the time when required by project schedules
* Must be comfortable working away from Calgary for extended project assignments
* Must be willing to complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment
* Must be fit for duty and able to safely perform the physical requirements of the position
* Strong commitment to workplace and construction-site safety
* Ability to work independently and as part of a field crew
* Ability to provide direction and support to other crew members when required
* Reliable and able to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment
* Ability to safely perform physically demanding construction work, including lifting up to 50 lbs., carrying, climbing, bending, working at heights and working outdoors in varying weather and site conditions
## Safety Certifications / Training
Candidates must hold the following certifications or be willing and able to obtain them prior to deployment to a project site:
* **CSTS 2020**
* **WHMIS**
* **Fall Protection**
* **Telehandler / Zoom Boom Operator Training**
The following training and experience are considered assets:
* **Aerial Work Platform / Elevated Work Platform Training**
* **Rigging and Signalling Training**
* **Standard First Aid / CPR**
* Previous experience working around crane operations and modular building lifts
Additional project-specific safety training or certifications may be required depending on the client, project site or scope of work.
## Work Requirements
* Full-time availability
* Approximately 40 hours per week, with overtime or additional hours potentially required based on project schedules
* Ability and willingness to travel throughout Western Canada
* Travel may be required up to 100% of the time during active project assignments
* Ability to work at remote and temporary construction sites
* Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
* Ability to work from the Phoenix Modular yard in Calgary when not assigned to a project site
* Flexibility to accommodate changing project schedules, travel requirements and site conditions
Phoenix Modular is looking for an experienced, safety-focused Carpenter Lead Hand who understands modular construction, can take ownership of work in the field and is comfortable providing hands-on leadership when required. The successful candidate will combine strong carpentry skills with practical modular installation experience, sound judgment and the ability to work effectively with crews, equipment operators and other trades.
